Regular readers will remember a post a little while back where I explained exactly what supplements I take, and why. I also included a comment that I thought most of the stuff in your typical GNC or other similar store was junk. I believe that even more today.
My clients know that I generally don’t recommend supplements, mainly because you don’t need most of the stuff in a GNC. Also, most of the supplement marketers make all kinds of false claims, and there really isn’t any way to know what is actually in the bottle. As I said in the previous post, all I take are a daily multivitamin, calcium, essential fatty acid, and protein powder.
Well, you may now be surprised to hear that I actually do have some recommendations for those of you who are interested in supplements. Prograde Nutrition has a very narrow line of products that I can finally recommend with confidence. They’ve only got a handful of products, but what they have is basically all you need. They have a multivitamin that is actually made with whole foods like broccoli, spinach, carrots, grapefruit, etc. They have an excellent essential fatty acid product made from krill, which by the way, is actually the most abundant life form on the planet (okay, I watch a lot of Discovery Channel shows). And they have a great protein/workout recovery drink powder.
That’s it. (They plan on adding a meal replacement powder/bar option soon as well.) Check out the website and you can actually see all of the ingredients and other nutritional info. Again, the product line is intentionally narrow, because like me, these guys believe that most of the other stuff out there is junk. And, you can only get this stuff online and through personal trainers and other fitness professionals. I’m sorry, but none of the $6.50/hour flunkies at GNC have a clue about real nutrition.
So there you go. If you are interested in using nutritional products that actually have value and benefit, without having to decipher the labels on all of the aisles of crap at GNC, I recommend you give Prograde a try. And yes, I actually use this stuff now as well.
