You’re Either Growing or Dying

So, the holidays are over and January is here.  What are you going to do differently this week, month, year that will make you better than you were yesterday?

I’m not talking about a resolution.  You know what I think about New Year’s resolutions.

Challenge your body. You're stronger than you think.I’m talking about striving to be better, trying something new, challenging yourself, a little fitness kaizen.

If you keep doing the same things all of the time, you’ll always get what you’ve already got.  Expand your horizons.

Read one new book per week. Try yoga. Do your workouts backwards for a week. Stop smoking. Don’t watch anything on network television for a week. Stop watching the news. Learn how to tango.

It’s January, it’s a new year, it’s time to try different things. Face it, you’re either growing or dying.  There is no status quo.

For me, I’ve got a couple of new things I’m going to try.

First, I’m going with the one new book per week idea.  Some will be printed, some will be audiobooks.  Some people may say the audio book route is cheating, but I say it’s a smart use of my time.  If I’m still learning something, it ain’t cheating. I’ve got a business and a family, so sometimes finding time to read in peace and quiet can be a challenge.  But, I spend enough time in the car that I can make that into productive time by listening to audiobooks.  (BTW, I get mine at Audible.com.)

Second thing I’m going to do, on top of my regular workouts, is 3000 kettlebell swings during the month of January.  Yup, 3000 of them.  Why, you ask?  Why not?  I saw someone talking about it on the internet and figured, what the hell? I’ve never done it and I want to see how it goes.

If you don’t push yourself, you don’t grow.  And no, I’m not just going to do 100 per day.  I don’t come to studio on Thursdays, and I’m not lumping a kettlebell home on the weekends.  I generally work out four days per week, Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday.  So, if you need help with the math, that works out to 187.5 kb swings per workout.

I started today and did 210 swings, along with DB incline chest presses, 1-arm rows, sandbag squats, face pulls, and ab wheels. Can’t wait to see what kind of impact trying something different has on me at the end of the month.  Hopefully it’s good.

I’ve got 2790 swings left to go.  I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

So, what are you going to do differently?  How are you going to grow, mentally or physically?  Let me know in the comments below and keep us updated on your progress.

Whatever happened to pacing yourself on the KB swings…? At this rate you'll exceed your goal! (And that's scary for a lot of people)

I've go a few plans besides for just generic goal of getting fit. One of the things I've always wanted to do is run a 10k, I know it isn't a marathon but you have to start somewhere.

Good luck with the KB swings.

That's awesome Julie. Yeah, it's not a marathon, but it's also farther than 99% of the population can run so that's still pretty damn good. Let us know when you do it.

    Best of success,
    Dave

Well, since I work out on Mon/Tues/Weds/Fri, I figure Wednesdays will be the toughest day, so if I get ahead on Mon/Tues, I can ease back a bit on Weds. Always need to have a plan…
