When Nutrition Is No Better Than Politics

nutrition politics

Nutrition can often mimic politics when people become dogmatic about their particular nutritional strategy, never considering that there can be other strategies that are just as valid. They take on a holier-than-thou attitude because they believe that their nutritional choice is superior to all others. The truth is that vegans, primals, vegetarians, paleos, raw foodies, omnivores, etc. can all eat well and get proper nutrition if they learn to eat right.

The Berenstain Bears Guide to Weight Loss

berenstain03

Every evening after dinner, my 4 year old wants to watch an episode of The Berenstain Bears. She’ll want Mommy or Daddy to sit with her, and if it’s a Daddy night, it’s a good bet that I’ll doze off about three minutes into it. We’ve seen every episode about a hundred times, so I don’t think I’m missing much. Or at least I didn’t think that I was. Yesterday I actually stayed awake to watch the epic…

Analytical vs. Commonsensical Nutrition Q&A

kk_metro_library_11

I received an email on Wednesday from a new reader, Christine from Canada, who had a few nutrition-related questions. Normally I try to reply personally to as many of these types of emails as possible, but I thought it would be better to just answer her questions here. Who knows, maybe some of you have similar questions.

dangerCN_2312

Let’s look at some examples of the calorie/quality trade off. Take a trip down the frozen food aisle and you’ll see row after row of frozen dinners from Healthy Choice (an oxymoron of a name if there ever was one) and Weight Watchers (not so) Smart Ones. Most people think these are great choices because, along with convenience, they’re usually in the neighborhood of 300 calories or less. That’s great, but let’s take a look at what makes up those calories. Here are the ingredients for…

Milk: Is It Good or Bad?

Milk: Is it good or bad for you?

Is milk good or bad? Now I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but somewhere along the line, milk apparently became this hugely divisive issue with people on both sides of the fence who passionately believe they are on the right side. You’ve got the anti-milk crowd, the pro-milk crowd, the raw milk crowd, and the “we’re totally influenced by millions of lobbying dollars” crowd (ie. the USDA). Which crowd is right?

There are a thousand different reasons for the growing number of overweight and obese individuals.  Everybody has their favorite. We eat too much.  We don't exercise enough.  We spend too much time in front of the TV, on the computer, in the car, behind a desk.  We've supersized our meals.  We've got junk food vending machines ...
