Lettuce, Light Sabres, and Lessons in Happiness

I'm in violent agreement with Sean. Less can be more. Less stuff. Less stress. Fewer apps on your phone. It's all good. 95% of you can live without email and GPS on your phone. 100% of you can live without a light sabre on your phone. Just because you can have something doesn't mean always should. Smart phones are just an example here, but the truth is we waste so much time, energy, and money chasing all kinds of...

Analytical vs. Commonsensical Nutrition Q&A

I received an email on Wednesday from a new reader, Christine from Canada, who had a few nutrition-related questions. Normally I try to reply personally to as many of these types of emails as possible, but I thought it would be better to just answer her questions here. Who knows, maybe some of you have similar questions.

Sorry, But Muscle Doesn’t Burn Nearly as Many Calories as You Want It to

Another thing I'm calling bullsh*t on is the oft-repeated claim that a pound of muscle burns 50 calories per day, even at rest. In the past two days I've not only seen two fitness pros (who should know better) parroting this, but I did a quick search and found this figure in articles all over the internet. Truth be told, I've probably been guilty of saying it at some point in the past. Probably even followed that up with a quote about waiting an hour before going for a swim.

I Was a Big, Fat, Unhealthy Mess

Before age 35, my main vegetables would have been potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and iceberg lettuce. And that would have been if I had a side salad at some shitty restaurant, or in the case of tomatoes and lettuce, if I went with the Whopper instead of the BK Big Fish. And yes, french fries ='d potatoes back then. Of course, before age 35 I was also a big, fat, unhealthy mess.

Diets, Kaizen, and the Art of Undieting

Dieting sucks. Diets are temporary. The weight loss they bring is temporary. They lead to the development of bad habits. They aren't fun. They don't make people happy. They're restrictive. They focus on thinness instead of health. They caused that volcano in Iceland to erupt. Okay, that's not true, but they do make you do stupid things like count calories, or worse, count "points".

Excuse Me, There’s Food in My Chemicals

Let's look at some examples of the calorie/quality trade off. Take a trip down the frozen food aisle and you'll see row after row of frozen dinners from Healthy Choice (an oxymoron of a name if there ever was one) and Weight Watchers (not so) Smart Ones. Most people think these are great choices because, along with convenience, they're usually in the neighborhood of 300 calories or less. That's great, but let's take a look at what makes up those calories. Here are the ingredients for...

Milk: Is It Good or Bad?

Is milk good or bad? Now I'm not exactly sure when it happened, but somewhere along the line, milk apparently became this hugely divisive issue with people on both sides of the fence who passionately believe they are on the right side. You've got the anti-milk crowd, the pro-milk crowd, the raw milk crowd, and the "we're totally influenced by millions of lobbying dollars" crowd (ie. the USDA). Which crowd is right?

Please Help Bella Tucker

Bella is eight years old, a third grader at South School, and member of the Phantom Gymnastics team. Easter Sunday 2010 was a day Bella was looking forward to because of the Easter Egg hunt with her siblings and cousins. But, later in the day she began to feel ill, and went to bed early with what her family thought was the flu. Unfortunately, it wasn't the flu.

No, You Just Eat Too Much and Move Too Little

I hear voices in my head. Doesn't mean I'm crazy (though some may argue that), because we all have voices inside of our heads. Little voices in our subconscious that direct our actions and behaviors. And these voices can either help you or derail you when it comes to weight loss.
